Everybody loves a snow day, and Scratchy is no exception!  In this project, we write a story in ScratchJr called Scratchy’s Snowy Day. The story follows Scratchy as he gets ready, goes outside to play in the snow, and then comes back inside to warm up with friends.

As we create the story, we will design our own pages and backdrops, including Scratchy’s bedroom, the snowy outdoors, and his dining room. We will draw and edit characters and objects like snowflakes, a snowman, snowballs, mugs, and winter clothes. 

As we build the story, we will use code to make characters move, talk, and interact. Scratchy will walk out of his room, go outside, build a snowman, and have a snowball fight. We will make snow fall, use loops to repeat actions, add sounds, and connect pages so the story plays from beginning to end.

By the end of this project, we will have a complete animated winter story that we designed, drew, and coded ourselves in ScratchJr.

ScratchJr is designed to allow young children (ages 5-7) to learn to code.  Students work on a tablet, and nearly everything is done with drag-and-drop.  There's almost no typing at all!  However, students develop real problem solving skills by figuring out and constructing the correct sequence of instructions needed to perform a specific task.
